Delta Junction Pool League Rules

1.  The Home team player will rack, and the Visiting team player will break.

2.  On the break, at least two balls must hit a rail to be a good break.   Player may break anywhere on the rack.    If a player should miss-cue on the break, the player is given one more try to break.   If, after two tries, there is still not a good break, the opponent will break.

3.  If the cue ball is struck and then touched by player’s hand or stick, he looses his shot and his opponent will break.   If the cue ball is touched by hand or stick, and then hits the rack, the balls are re-racked and the opponent will break.

4.  The player wins if he makes the 8 ball on the break, unless he scratches or the cue ball lands off the table.    This is a cue ball foul and any cue ball foul when pocketing the 8 ball is an automatic loss of game.

5.  Any ball that comes to rest off of the bed of the table, except for the cue ball, is to be spotted.   The player then looses his shot.   If the 8 ball is jumped off the table anytime during the game, it is an automatic loss for the player shooting.

6.  A spotted ball must be placed on the foot spot if possible.   When balls on or near the foot spot interfere with  the spotting of a ball, the ball to be spotted is placed directly behind the foot spot and as close as possible  without moving any interfering balls.

7.  It is a foul (or scratch) if the cue ball is pocketed or otherwise lands off the bed of the table.

8.  When a player scratches, the opponent has cue ball in hand behind the head string (in the kitchen).   He may not shoot any object ball that lies behind the head string without first shooting the cue ball past the head  string, then causing it to come back behind the head string and hit the object ball.

9.  When a player breaks and makes only one type of ball, solids or stripes, he will be considered to have chosen  that type of ball to shoot at for the remainder of the game.

10.   When a player breaks and makes both solids and stripes, he must choose one or the other.   If he makes  more solids than stripes, or vise-versa, he still has his choice of either solids or stripes.

11.   When a player has a choice between solids or stripes, he must choose before shooting, and he must tell his  opponent which type of balls he has chosen.

12.   When a player chooses solids, he must hit a solid first, and vise-versa for stripes.   The 8 ball is not a neutral ball (not a solid nor a stripe).

13.   If, after choosing solids, a player hits a stripe first and makes a solid, he looses his shot and the table is still open.   Vise-versa for stripes.

14.   If, after choosing solids, a player hits a solid first and makes a stripe, he looses his shot and the table remains open.   Vise-versa for stripes.

15.   If, after choosing solids, a player makes a solid on a good hit and a stripe also goes in, the player is committed to solids and will continue to shoot solids without loosing his shot.   Vise-versa for stripes.

16.   If, after choosing solids or stripes, a player shoots but does not make the ball of his choice in the indicated pocket, the table is still open and the other player may choose either solids or stripes.   The choice remains open until a player makes a ball of his choice on a good hit without scratching.

17.   The player need only call the ball and the pocket.   It is never necessary to indicate details such as the number of cushions, banks, kisses, caroms, etc.   The shot is a good shot if the player makes the object ball in the pocket called.

18.   The player must call or indicate the object ball and the intended pocket before shooting, or it is a foul and the player looses his shot.   If the opponent is unsure of the call, he may request that it be restated.

19.   A player must keep one foot on the floor while shooting or he looses his shot.

20.There will be no coaching from any player on the team.   Everyone will play his own game.   Team members cannot remind players of any ball overlooked.   If there is any coaching, the player will loose his shot whether he makes the ball or not.   The opponent or Team Captain may call the foul to the team that is shooting.

21.   If, at any time during the game, a player makes his object ball in the called pocket on a good hit without scratching, but also makes one of his opponents balls, the shot is good and the player will continue without  loss of shot.

22.   If a player is shooting at the 8 ball and makes it legally but also makes one of his opponent’s balls, the shot is still good and the player wins the game.

23.   If a player is shooting at the 8 ball and doesn’t hit the 8 ball, but makes one of his opponent’s balls, he does not loose and the game continues.

24.   If a player is shooting at the 8 ball and hits it but does not make it, and instead makes one of his opponent’s balls, he does not loose and the game continues.

25.   The 8 ball is not neutral.   It must be made either on the break or, after a player’s colored balls are all pocketed, with a separate legal shot on a good hit.

26.   If there is a question about whether a shot will be a good hit, the two Team Captains will watch and only they will decide.

27.   When shooting at the 8 ball, the player may call the pocket or point with his stick.   Either will be acknowledged by the opponent.

28.   A player may not call a “safe” shot on the 8 ball.   The player must call a pocket, however, the player will not loose the game by not making the 8 ball in the pocket called.   The player will loose if the 8 ball goes in any pocket other than the one called.

29.   A player looses the game if he scratches on the 8 ball, makes the 8 ball in the wrong pocket, or hit his opponents ball first and makes the 8 ball on the same shot.   If the 8 ball is knocked in accidentally at any time during the game, the player that knocked it in looses the game.

30.   Playing “safe” is fair.   However, if a ball has not been made for five consecutive shots per player, the game will be declared ‘no contest’ and the balls re-racked.   In this case the game will be played over with the same player breaking as before.

31.   Any accidental or unintentional movement of balls in play, whether moved by the cue ball, cue stick, hand, sleeve, hair, crutch, etc., is an automatic loss of shot.   The balls will stay where they stop and it is the opposing player’s shot.   If any ball is touched and does not appear to move, it is not a foul and play will continue.   This also applies to the cue ball, although on a scratch shot the cue ball is not in play until it leaves the kitchen.   The opponent or Team Captain may call the foul to the team that is shooting.

32.   Any mis-cue will be considered a shot (except as stated in rule 2).

33.   Jump and Masse` shots are not legal shots and will result in loss of turn.

34.   If a player shoots any ball, including the 8 ball, and it ‘hangs’ in the pocket, he may wait fifteen seconds to see if the ball will fall.   If it does fall during this time it is considered pocketed during that player’s turn and the game continues.   Any type of interference, such as blowing on the ball, stomping on the floor, bumping the table, etc., will be considered a foul and will result in loss of shot, or loss of game if shooting the 8 ball.

35.   If opponent scratches and a player has no legal ball to shoot at outside of the kitchen, he can choose to spot any one of his balls from the kitchen.

36.  If the 8 ball is left in the kitchen and is the player’s last ball, and opponent scratches, the player has the option to leave the 8 ball where it is or to spot it.

37.  Players are allowed 2 minutes for their first shot in a turn and 1 minute for each additional shot in the same turn.  Failure to shoot within the allotted time is delay of game and will result in loss of that player’s turn (forfeit of shot).
